Individual Assessment Submission

Introduction

The Black Project has come towards an end after 13 weeks of studies, learning and producing different aspects that were required in order to complete the project. The initial mission or the brief that we have put together as a group was to bring the best of British and Japanese motorcycle manufacturing together by creating an accurate 3D model of the Norton Featherbed Slimline Frame and to have the Honda CB750 engine fitted in. The vision has changed along the way as we do not have experience and thus causing the direction and outcome to change as we go along. Having said that, we still managed to make developments and strive in order to stay on track so that we can accomplish our planned mission and outcome and the following content consists of my individual contribution as a team player and my personal milestones that I wish to achieve as an individual.

1. Individual Milestones

  • Wiki Management:
The Wiki is an important aspect and a method of submission in this course as stated in the course outline that the group wiki covers 60% of the entire course. Other than being a method of submission, the wiki is a powerful medium that benefits our group project as we are able to document the phases that we have to go through to complete the project. Having said that, the Wiki needs to be managed and updated from time to time as the project goes on and I am in charged of monitoring and made sure the tasks that we carried out is uploaded and edited on the Wiki so that people who looks at the Wiki will have all the information they need and also able to see the stages we have to go through to get to the final result of our project.

  • Modelling:
  • My second milestone is modelling. For this project, modelling up motorcycle parts was required and we were assigned to different parts of the bike and the task was to have accurate models on solidworks. Everyone has the role of a 3D modeller in the project and playing the part of a modeller. With that, modelling became one of the milestones that I wish to do and hope to improve on. This milestone is beneficial not only as a practice for now but also a very useful skill in the future as architecture companies would expect you to have skills as such in order to perform in projects.

  • Research:
  • Researching has become my third milestone. The reason for choosing this as one of my individual milestones is because researching plays an important part in almost every assignment and project especially this project involving motorcycle that I do not have any experience or much knowledge on, and therefore carrying out research helped to understand the project better and the use of information and materials from various sources broadens the thinking and knowledge. This is also a required skill in the future for example researching about a company you are about to go for an interview with, so that the company knows you showed interest the chances of getting employed would be higher. Also, this milestone helped me developed a habit of referencing so that I would not be caught copying work that does not belong to me.

  • Presentation skills:
  • The fourth milestone of mine is on presentational skills. Presentation skills are a set of skills that include speaking, writing and documenting images. These are a set of effective communication skills that I find important and applicable to the project. All these are important to help deliver your message across so that people would understand clearly the content and idea that I am trying to show.

2. Measuring Milestones

Wiki Management:
The way that I would measure this milestone is to see if the navigations are places correctly and whether the Wiki page is user friendly. That can be tested by looking at the Wiki from a user’s point or view. Other than, feedback I get from my group leader helped me correct and gave me a different opinion of organizing the Wiki so that the Wiki page is presentable and accessible to all.

Modelling:
Modelling requires accuracy and how I would measure this task is to make sure I have the correct measurements of it and make a quick sketch by hand or cad drawings before having them done on solidworks. I will make sure that the models represents the physical model and be as accurate as possible. Also, by getting feedback from the tutors and lecturer from my first submission helped me measure the skill to show effort and performance in modelling.

Research:
To be able to tell if the research done is successful depends on the relevancy of the research, and being able to show evidence such as videos and images to help understand the content better and being able to capture key points of the topic. Also, research means a collection of materials that have been published and therefore it should consists references that serves as a prove instead of laying down information because people would think that it is just an assumption.

Presentational Skills:
To measure these presentational skills as mentioned that is speaking, written and documenting, I will need to understand the content that I am going to tell people as it would be more convincing if people see the confidence in you. Also, I will go through the written content to see if it is understandable for readers. As for the documentation part, I believe that creating a series of photo that tells stories is useful and thus I would see if the photos are communication with the people viewing them by labeling, creating simple photo collage, or enlarge important parts to create attention.

3. Roles and Responsibilities. Tasks performed

For my individual milestones, I have to play a few roles and have different responsibilities. With the given roles, I was able to carry out task and these are the tasks that I have completed based on the roles I have as a:

- Wiki Developer
- 3D Modeller
- Researcher
- Presentation slides developer/Presenter
- Documenter

Completed tasks as a:

  • Wiki Developer

-evidence showing that I managed the Wiki- Shades of Black.

Creating pages on the Menu bar

Navigations editing and organising pages accordingly

Involvement in writing the brief

Taking notes in class and in discussions and putting them on the wiki as a record under weekly blog

Listing down the tasks each member need to do on the Individual Task Allocation.

In charged of writing up project planned timeline and also adjusting the Gantt charts according to the progress.

Creating simple photo collages on photo documentation along with brief text to describe images.

Putting photos together

Creating table and putting the files in an organised way on the e-Resources page.

Completed tasks as a:

  • 3D Modeller

- The first image shows the model that I had in my first attempt, and was later on refined and showed examples of using the fillet tool in the model ti make it more realistic and accurate. The Final Product shows the renewed version of the model.

- Featherbed Frame
- Cast Aluminium
- Milling
- 3D Printing
- Honda CB750
- Laser Cutting
- FARO Measuring
- Motorcycle Engine

Completed tasks as a:

  • Presentation slides developer/ Presenter

Being part of a team, I have my individual part to play and that is having content on the Communication Presentation. My part falls under platforms, describing how we practice communication among ourselves as a team (internal communication) and also methods we used to communicate effectively with the public(external communication).

- Taking part in the video footage to speak about the project.

- Being involved in Final Presentation and presenting on quotes

- Creating Prezi Presentation to show our progress and the different phases throughout the project.

Completed tasks as a:

  • Documenter

- Involvement during the deconstruction of the bike to take photos for photo documentation as well as understanding the process.

- In charged of photo documentation that includes editing photos, doing collages, and writing description based on the images.

An example of one of the many weeks for photo documentation.

- Laying out and arranging the videos on the Wiki as part of the video documentation.

4. Achievement

Achievement that I get out off from my first milestone- Wiki management can be seen through the work that I have done on the Wiki page itself. I was given the opportunity to be part of Shades of Black and being able to contribute as a team player in this aspect-the wiki that shows a detailed record of the project and being involved in the duration of this course and project. To show my work and contribution towards the submission, the Wiki is the evidence that supports my text. The wiki has title pages on the Menu list or navigation lists with appropriate names that show different title or topic that users would be able to access and view. The way that I have organized the wiki seems to be the most accessible way for people to get around and gain information needed.

For the second major milestone, Modelling, I managed to finish up the battery box and other models such as the bracket. I would say that this milestone is challenging given it is a new software that we started to pick up only after week 3 and having to model accurate models, I had to redo some of my models from the first submission due to the lack of accuracy and finally modelling them again with different tools instead of simple ones. I detected the problems of the earlier ones and managed to remodelled them as accurate as possible.

This shows the outcome of it.

What I have accomplished as a researcher was to be able to find resources related to the project, for example research on the honda, the featherbed frame and what are the types of option available to us in order to get our prototypes of the new brackets done in, for example cnc milling, laser cutting, and what are the technologies available outside to track measurements at the most accurate way- faro measuring technology.

The research work done:

Last but not least the fourth and final milestone, presentational skills. These are a set of skills that are applicable and useful. I would see presentational skills as a form of communication through speaking and also in written or documenting important information. Being able to deliver the message across the people you are reaching out to and helping them understand your concept and idea shows that the presentation is successful. To help me accomplished these skills, I did group presentations and videos as well of prezi presentation slides as evidence of what my personally contributions are.

The following shows the involvement and how I have used presentational skills involving speaking/presenting, writing and creating slide :

5. Learning

It has been quite a journey throughout the course and I learnt a lot through working on my milestones. Having to work in a group has increased my presentational skills as I need to communicate with my members and also opt for opinions of others instead of having everything done my way or the way I’m used to. I have practiced my part as a team player and making sure I stay on track with the rest of the group and being involved in everyway that I could. Besides that, I managed to pick up a new design software- solidworks that we were not taught and created 3d models using the tools. This is another skill that I improved on as I started of with having no experience with this software to being able to use and create models from it after going through tutorials. Although the course has ended, I would still like to exercise this skill as I find it helpful and very useful for future purposes.

Other that that, I have managed to learn something by doing research work and that is understanding the text and being able to relate the content with relevant images and videos as a support to the text and being able to look up for appropriate and relevant materials as a source and a piece of useful information. By doing that, I am also practicing my referencing, in terms of that it means referencing correctly as the consequences could be quite bad for failure to reference other people’s work. Lastly, through managing the wiki, I understand that visual and content are as important because visual is what the public will first look at and therefore, managing the wiki has improved my ability to be more critical as the users and viewers are public and general and thus I have to make sure the wiki is presentable and informative so that people will not find fault in it. To learn and improve on critical thinking, the reviews we had to make based on the group presentations has also contributed towards improving my critical thinking and also to be more expressive verbally as well as in written form.

Here are the reviews I have written:
Review on Group Presentation: Planning by 3RDiConstruct
Review on Group Presentation: Intellectual Property: Interactive Architecture
Review on Group Presentation: Intellectual Property: GeriAmbience
Review on Group Presentation: Conflict: DCLD Group
Review on Group Presentation: Conflict: Kinecting the Boxes
Review on Group Presentation: Remuneration: Vivid Project Group

This is a review of me from the project leader

Summary

The project has increased my personal understand and helped me developed a set of skills. It has been such a productive project where we were able to do practical and theory work on the project and this has expanded my knowledge on ways of communicating with people, to have the project documented and online that will be seen by the public and also have challenged my presentational skills and most importantly it has improved my modelling skills.

Having said that, I would still exercise all the skills mentioned by showing more effort and pushing myself harder in terms of presentation and modelling as these are the sets of skill that will be useful in future projects. I understand that I have to be more outspoken and confident in order to achieve my goals. The overall experience that I have gained out of this project was overwhelming and I did not expect to gain so many things – management, modelling, presentation, research, documentation, and thus this conclude my final report.
